Many shop bought cleansers do actually contain essential oils – which are a great benefit to the skin – but they also usually contain different additives and preservatives. These will usually be added in order to keep the cleanser fresh for longer and prolong the shelf-life, but with very few, simple and natural ingredients we can create our very own facial cleanser home – we will just blend smaller amounts, so the ingredients still stay fresh!

We need our homemade face wash with essential oils to have one main purpose – to remove make-up effectively and clean the skin, however using essential oils and homemade ingredients we can ensure that our cleanser is delivering other benefits to the skin too.

DIY Tea Tree face wash

This is an ideal face wash/cleanser for oily skin. My main piece of advice for oily or acne skin is to treat it gently!  The tendency is to try to cleanse away all the excess oils on the surface.  BUT DON’T!!

An oily skin does have excess surface oil, but if you strip it all away, the skin will compensate by making more and you could end up even more oily and enter a vicious circle.  You need a cleanser that cleans the skin but that will also soothe and hydrate this skin type. A creamy facial wash with added ingredients to hydrate, like this DIY tea tree face wash is ideal.

Organic castile soap, tea tree oil, grapefruit oil & petitgrain oil

Castile soap is a very natural, fragrance free liquid cleanser, which itself has very few ingredients. (Plus is can be used for so many other recipes!). When the essential oils are added to the soap, it becomes a much creamy substance, which is so pleasant to use on the skin – it feels very hydrating, while this blend of essential oils, helps to regulate the amount of oil being produced while also having an antibacterial effect on any spots or congestion. Plus, it removes even the heaviest of make-up!

Using a cleansing oil or balm is ideal, as at the end of the day when the moisture has been sucked out your skin, this feels so delicious on your skin!  It also adds to the hydration of the skin, and leaves the skin, not only soft, but soft, calm and moisturised as well.

Castile soap, sweet almond oil, rose, geranium

This cleanser contains the same Castile soap, as its lovely creamy formulation will suit dry skin well, however, in this cleanser we add a small amount of sweet almond oil, to add extra hydrating properties. The result is clean, soft, smooth and hydrated skin. It it important to use a toner after this cleanser, to ensure all traces of the oily residue is removed. The addition of of rose and geranium essential oils, soothes and hydrates while encouraging the cell renewal of the skin, so adds protection against ageing too.

A light cleansing formulation will suit a more sensitive skin.  You need to protect and repair the surface of the skin, as well as removing make-up.

Castile soap, chamomile, 1 drop sandalwood, 2 drops bergamot

These essential oils have cooling and soothing properties, along with the ability to reduce redness in the skin and repair any irritated skin conditions.

Why do we need to cleanse the skin?

It’s drilled into us from a young age to keep the skin ultra clean, morning and night, to avoid spots, dryness and ageing.

 But why?

And is it as necessary as we’re made to believe?

Well, yes and no.

Yes, at night it is.  During the night our cell turnover is increased, meaning that our skin is working to renew itself more at night than it is during the day.  The cells from the lower layers of the skin are working harder to get themselves nearer to the
surface, which will give us smoother, hydrated, more radiant skin.  If the surface of the skin has residues of make-up or dirt and grime on, not only does this create a barrier, thus not allowing the fresh skin cells to appear on the surface, but it will also cause the pigments from the make-up or the dirt to get trapped below the dead cells on the surface and cause blocked pores, spots, and generally dull skin.

However, be aware of over-cleansing!!

Squeaky-clean skin – when it feels very tight and dry –  is not a good thing.

This means you have stripped some of the essential acid mantle that protects us from bacteria, leaving you prone to spots, dryness, sensitivity, and dull lacklustre skin.

I would avoid cleansing in the morning – it just isn’t necessary.  As long as you have removed make-up the night before, you don’t need to. And could strip those valuable oils away.  A splash of water or going over the skin with some toner is sufficient to freshen up before your daily moisturizer.

Always follow cleansing with the use of a toner.  A  TONER is an essential product to use in your skincare routine!!  Find out WHY HERE.
